The perfect ambassador for Italian Wine

If I were trying to woo an Italian wine newbie, I’d want this in my bag. It’s unmistakably a wine of place, undeniably ‘serious,’ and surprisingly affordable. It is also unlike anything else in the world. Vintage after vintage, Ronchi offers a modestly priced entrée into one of the world’s greatest terroirs, the Langhe hills of southeastern Piedmont.

Giancarlo Rocca is the fourth generation of his family to live next to the Ronchi Cru in Barbaresco. The Ronchi vineyard is located in the southern part of Barbaresco on a mix of clay and limestone soils with eastern exposure, and is bordered by two famous Crus: Montestefano to the north and Moccagatto to the south. Giancarlo works his vineyards entirely by hand without the use of herbicides or pesticides. After hand-harvesting, all grapes are destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wines age for two years in large, neutral Slavonian oak barrels and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. 

Tasting Notes:

The Ronchi Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo. In the glass, the wine pours a light ruby with garnet and tawny highlights. Wonderful aromas of cherries, currant, dried flowers and sandalwood jump from the glass. On the palate, the tannins are surprisingly soft for a Nebbiolo, the acidity firm and taught but still refreshing and elegant. Flavors of tobacco, rose petal and a gorgeous concentration of fruit flow effortlessly from the attack to the long and persistent finish. Furthermore this wine showcases the feminine side of Barbaresco beautifully with a charm and class that is unmistakable. You can drink now after decanting for at least 30 minutes, however this wine will really standout after 5+ years of bottle age and will continue to develop over the next 15 years.
