2019 Gros-Tollot ‘La 50-50’ Cotes du Brian IGP Pays d’Herault

WSI93+ Aromas of blackberries, crushed stones, and wild garrigue. Medium-bodied, suave; flavors of black cherries and plums. Having matured in stainless steel tanks, this wine is delicate, fruity and tense. Its vocation is to be refreshing and fresh. Pairs beautifully with grilled pork or lamb sausages; weekday hamburgers; or any Mediterranean-inspired outdoor meal.
From a majority of 25+ year old Grenache, it is joined by Syrah and “young” Carignan of 35 year’s old. Having matured in stainless steel tanks, this wine is delicate, fruity and tense. Its vocation is to be a refreshing and crisp red.

Anne Gros, a fifth generation winemaker, is one of the most respected, and fortunate, wine producers in the world. As an only child she inherited all of her father François’s three hectares of prime Côte d’Or vineyard land around the most bejeweled village in Burgundy, Vosne-Romanée, and has been running it with great aplomb since the age of 22. In 2008 she joined with another fifth generation winemaker, Jean-Paul Tollot, of another well-regarded Burgundian domaine, Tollot-Beaut in Chorey-les-Beaune to create the Terroirs de Cazelles in the Haut Minervois area of the Languedoc. 

In what is arguably France’s most challenging wine region, Gros and Tollot are without question crafting some of the more harmonious, captivating red blends in the Languedoc today. The estate’s 35 acres of old vines in Cazelles grow on a plateau at the foot of the Montagne Noir, 660 feet above sea level, the same altitude as Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy. This breathtaking region boasts exceptional terroir, as both limestone and chalk-rich fossils are abundant. Cooler temperatures allow grapes to ripen slowly, the result being balanced, mineral-infused wines.
 
The  ‘50/50’ name describes the partnership of winemakers Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot—from the fields to the cellar, all work is divided equally.
