2020 Fuligni Ginestreto Rosso di Montalcino DOC
When we are on the hunt for wine, one of the most gratifying things we can find is a bottle that inspires infinite ideas for food pairings. Even better is when we find one of those bottles and the bottle price justifies us trying it with each and every one of those ideas. The ‘Ginestreto’ Rosso di Montalcino from Fuligni ticks both of those boxes. Our tasters were quick to remark on the depth of the fruit profile, and the subtle spice that accompanied it. In the best way, it is very classically Italian, but its appeal is wide-reaching. Our minds went first to classic Sangiovese pairings; meat-driven dishes with bold flavors and robust characters like wild boar, mature cheeses, and assertive pasta dishes like pappardelle with stewed rabbit or duck. If you were to just pick up a bottle or two of this wine, pairings like these would see you through.
However, at a price of $39/bottle, this is the type of bottle that is worth keeping a case of handy. You will find yourself frequently reaching for this bottle whenever dinner is almost ready and you have not yet picked the wine. Whipping up a curry or ordering from your favorite Indian takeout spot? Grilling sausages with peppers and onions for game night? Making a meal from a loaf of crusty bread, your favorite conservas (our favorite is mussels en escabeche), and a few zesty garnishes? In each of these situations, with a bottle of Fuligni, you will reach the ultimate food and wine pairing goal: the food makes the wine better, and the wine makes the food better!
A big bowl of popcorn and a movie also sounds pretty perfect to us.Â
