WSI95 WA95 The blockbuster 2000 Orion, which I assume is virtually all Syrah, possesses an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of liquid minerals, acacia flowers, blackberry liqueur, and graphite. Full-bodied, with tremendous intensity, purity, texture, and precision, this fabulous wine should be uncommonly long-lived.
Jay James:
Orion is a field blend of more than 11 different varieties, all growing in the Rossi Vineyard of St. Helena in Napa Valley, planted in 1905. The 2000 vintage is a perfectly aged example of what this old-style of wine-growing and winemaking can provide. Surprisingly dark color with a strong garnet edge, savory herbs sit on top of cherry compote, fresh plum jam and rich, warm fruit aromas and flavors. Plenty of structure left in this 24-year-old wine. Seems to be at it’s peak now, and yet it can likely continue to age gracefully for several more years.
