2011 Tenuta del Cerro Sagrantino Montefalco DOCG Umbria

JS93 So much pressed lavender to the nose here as well as the classic brambleberries but also some hints of sour cherries, leather and Chinese spices. This is full and delicious with moath-coating tannins, driven acidity and a compact yet long finish. Better in 2020.
Estate Notes: Intense ruby red color. Ample nose of red fruit with spices and a subtle hint of vanilla, dried fruits and chocolate. On the palate it is fresh, well-structued, with concentrated tannins in its youth, featuring a long, velvety finish. FOOD PAIRING: Ideal with roasts, game and aged cheeses. 100% Sagrantino, aged in French oak barriques for 12 months and in the bottles for 26 months before release.
Winemaker: Riccardo Cotarella nicknamed “the Wizard,” is the winemaker of the moment both at home in Italy and, believe it or not, in France. Very active with his own brand, Falesco, and with scores of other as a consultant, his style has brought a modern touch to Italian winemaking.

Sagrantino is a native varietal of Umbria, which, according to some, was brought to the region by Franciscan monks centuries ago. In the last 30 years, Sagrantino has enjoyed a resurgence in Umbria. Rich in tannins and polyphenols, Colpetrone takes extensive care in the cultivation of Sagrantino order to produce an elegant, balanced wine. Sagrantino di Montefalco received the DOCG designation in the 1990s.
