Estate Notes: Sourced from all over the state, Machete is a culmination of bird – dogging some of the best Petite Sirah, Grenache and Syrah vineyards that produce rich and flavorful fruit. Blind tasted to determine quality, the lots that make the Machete cut— pun intended— are qualified to be one with the family of labels.
Pure inky garnet in the glass, the aromatics of plum compote, wild blackberries, crushed gravel, peanut brittle and Tahitian vanilla emanate. Massive on the entry, the mid – palate is diverse with flavors of dark plums, black pepper, Amarena cherries, slow -roasted Moroccan lamb and a marbled leather texture. Rich, enveloping and vivacious, the wine finishes with perpetuating energy and length— not to mention the satisfying tannins that rouse a desire for more.
In 2009, the decision was made to create a new blend that featured the varietal most known for its tannins and inky color and least known for its ability to be delicate and complex. With only about 10,000 acres of Petite Sirah planted in California, we have been fortunate to literally taste through the state and discover the best regions for Petite Sirah. Coming off the success of the 2014 vintage, we were lucky to find even more vineyards whose wines met our strict standards for Machete. Resulting is a complex mélange of quality Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache from specific AVAs in California — such as the Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino, the Alexander, Knights and Santa Ynez Valleys, Sonoma Mountain and Atlas Peak, just to name a few.
