A rebel in the world of traditional winemaking, Antoine Gouffier’s extreme ideas have ruffled the feathers of some of his fellow winemakers in Pouilly-Fumé. However, in his short time at Domaine du Bouchot, he’s quickly mastered his own techniques that capture the mineral signature of this region.
Antoine was born and raised in the Loire Valley. He traveled across the United States, South Africa and Argentina to learn about wine and returned home with one goal: make great wine from the terroir of Pouilly-Fumé.
IN THE VINEYARD & CELLAR
Antoine is a strong believer in the benefits of biodynamics and is following in the footsteps of his mentor Pascal Kerbiquet. Only white wines are allowed under the label of Pouilly-Fumé AOC, but he also makes a rare orange wine from Sauvignon Blanc. Antoine prefers neutral containers that let the terroir express itself. He also experiments with old oak casks from a Burgundy winery, as well as amphorae and eggs. He’s a symbol of the new generation shaking up this conservative appellation.
