JD97 The first vintage where they’ve pulled out younger vines with the goal of elevating the quality, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch is based on 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and equal doses of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It has a stunning nose of pure cassis, graphite, crushed stone, darker chocolate, and baking spices. This carries to a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, yet polished Cabernet Sauvignon with incredible tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. There are a scant 300 cases made, and this is clearly one of the great values out there in truly great Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.
TWI95-97 I tasted a barrel sample of the 2021 Patria Oakville Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, with 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It is deep garnet-purple in color and features fragrant notes of crushed red and black currants, violets, and tar, with suggestions of black truffles and pencil lead. The full-bodied palate is completely filled with energetic black berry and mineral layers, framed by fine-grained tannins and a lively line, finishing long and earthy.
Patria (meaning one’s native country or homeland) is the newest project made by Tony Biagi and his own, paying homage to Tony’s background as a California native. Coming from the Oakville Ranch property that sits just south of Dalla Valle Vineyards and Peter Michael’s Au Paradis Vineyard on the eastern bench of Oakville.
Perched at 1,400 feet, in the eastern hills of Napa valley, Oakville Ranch may be the highest vineyard in the Oakville Appellation. Purchased in the mid 1980s by Robert and Mary Miner, and farmed organically by vineyard guru Phil Coturri, this 330 acre estate is home to 75 acres of vines planted in its rocky volcanic soils.
